M. J. Madden

Shawnee resident M.J. Madden, 84, passed away July 9, 2015. He was born in Oklahoma City to Clyde & Minnie (Jones) Madden, September 1, 1930. He lived in Newalla from 1931 – 1944, and Shawnee and Ada 1945 to 1946. He attended schools at Newalla, Shawnee, Ada, and Seminole Jr. College. He served in the US Army in Germany 1947 – 1948. He was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co from 1948-1950, then served with the 171st FA BN, 45th Infantry division in Japan and Korea 1950 and 1952, where he was also involved in Golden Gloves boxing. MJ married the love of his life, Barbara McKey on June 10, 1954 and had 61 happy years. They lived in Tecumseh for 47 years and he served as Mayor from 1971-1979. Other public services include: chairman of the Pottawatomie County Home Finance for 31 years; member of the Pott. County Excise Board for 3 years; Shawnee Civic and Cultural Development Authority (Expo) for 26 years. He was a member of the Tecumseh Broadway United Methodist Church, the Tecumseh Masonic Lodge, McAlester 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite Consistory, the India Shriners of Oklahoma City, and the 45th Infantry Division Association. MJ retired from Tinker AFB on December 7, 1978, then founded Tel-Elec Design Services, sub-contracting communication engineering for Southwestern Bell until retiring in 2000. MJ was preceded in death by his parents; sister Mary Lou (Madden) Tison; brothers Clyde Madden, Wichita, KS, David Madden, Tulsa, Richard Madden, Tulsa. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of the home; son: MJ Madden, Jr. (Skip) and wife Peggy, daughter: Cathy (Madden) Hobbs and husband Gary; son: Mickey Madden; son: Mike Madden; and daughter: Cindy Madden. Brothers: John Madden & wife Patsy of Bristow, OK; Donald Madden & wife Josie of Sand Springs, OK; half-sister: Leticia Cook of Ada, OK. As well as eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2015 in the chapel of Walker Funeral Service with Rev. Larry Sparks officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park, Shawnee, OK.
