Shawnee resident and educator Karen Sledge passed away at her home December 18, 2015.
After graduating high school she enlisted in the United States Army, where she was selected as “WAC of the Week” in 1963. She was stationed in Berlin, Germany and Washington D.C.
A graduate of E.C.U., she began a career in teaching which spanned 35 years. After retirement she continued her education earning a Master’s Degree from the University of Oklahoma. Her mentorship to both students and new teachers was invaluable.
Aside from teaching, raising and showing champion Shih-Tzu’s was her passion which she enthusiastically shared with people across the country.
She is survived by sisters: Linda, Sherry, and Francie, sons: and daughters-in-law Cary and Christina of Shawnee, Tim and Marta of Concord, N.C. Her greatest joys were her grandchildren: Kali, Emily, Ian, Allison, Hannah, Christopher, and Cody. She was also blessed with 9 Great-Grandchildren.
