Virgil William Affentranger, 84, of Shawnee, passed from this life on Thursday, January 26, 2017. Born December 18, 1932, in Waldron, Arkansas, he was the son of the late John and Edith Affentranger. He married Treva Lee Williamson on December 23, 1962 in Wichita, KS. Virgil was a graduate of Hinton High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma A&M University in Stillwater. He was a member of ROTC during college. Upon graduation he entered pilot’s training for the U.S. Air Force. He served the majority of his Air Force term as a pilot in Japan. Upon return to civilian life, he pursued further education by earning a master’s degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. A strong believer in education, he studied an additional year at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA and completed numerous National Science Foundation courses. Growing up on a farm, Virgil developed a tremendous love for agriculture and combined the careers of teaching high school science with farming and ranching. He was active in the Oklahoma Peanut Growers Association, serving that group as board member, treasurer, and president. Virgil was an avid sports fan and active supporter of Oklahoma State University athletics. He was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church where he taught boys’ Sunday School classes for many years. Virgil is preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers, J.D. and Earl Affentranger. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Treva; son Scott Affentranger and wife Miriah of Albuquerque, NM; son Michael Affentranger and wife Jenny of Shawnee; grandson Taylor Affentranger and wife Courtney of Vicenza, Italy; granddaughter Ashley Affentranger of Thornton, CO; grandsons Bracton Affentranger and Dallen Fluitt and granddaughter Ashlyn Fluitt of Albuquerque, NM; granddaughter Marlee Affentranger and grandson Toby Affentranger of Shawnee; and great-grandson Rownan Affentranger of Vicenza, Italy. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 30, 2017, at 2:00 P.M. at Walker Funeral Service in Shawnee. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Liberty Baptist Church of Shawnee.
