William A (Bill) Weaver died February 25, 2017 at the age of 93. He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma September 23, 1923; graduated from Ada High School in 1941 and Oklahoma Baptist University in 1950. He was active in scouting and a proud Eagle Scout. While attending OBU he worked as a Radio Announcer at KGFF until he joined the Army Air Corps from 1942 – 1946 where he served as a Control Tower Operator. Upon return from military service, he married Myrtle Doty in Sebastopol, CA in 1946 when they returned to Shawnee to begin their lives together. He became General Manager at KGFF in 1953. Many citizens of Shawnee looked forward to his commentaries on “Another Point of View”. A fan’s letter to the editor of the Shawnee News Star wrote about Mr. Weaver “I feel it is high time appreciation is expressed for the high morals which he upholds, as well as the very enlightening information that he offers on a variety of subjects.” He retired from KGFF in 1988 after 35 years of service. Bill was often referred to as “Mr. Shawnee” for a variety of reasons. He loved his community and gave generously and selflessly of his time. He was extremely proud to be instrumental in bringing the Gordon Cooper Vocational-Technical School into reality, where he served as President of the Board for 18 years. In 2005, as founding board president, he was inducted into the Gordon Cooper Technology Center Hall of Fame. He also served 21 years as a member of the Board of Directors for Shawnee Regional Hospital. His many offices held and awards received include: Rotary Club President, achieving 52 years of perfect attendance; Boss of the Year; Past Master Masonic Composite Lodge; President Shawnee Chamber of Commerce; Chairman Shawnee Economic Development Foundation; Shawnee Industrial Development Authority; Kiwanis Club Citizen of the Year; President Oklahoma Broadcasters Association; President YMCA; Chairman Salvation Army board; Chamber of Commerce Gordon Richards Service Award; Profiles of Excellence Award OBU Alumni Association. With great pride, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2013. He was active in United Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. Always a family man, he loved his family, his God and his country. He dearly cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Mary Burke Weaver; his father, Russell Donovan Weaver; daughter, Gloria Ann Weaver; daughter-in-law Ann Kelly Weaver and wife, Myrtle A. Doty Weaver. Surviving family members are daughter Judy Weaver Armstrong of Dallas; son Bob Weaver and daughter-in-law Kellianne Lowrey Weaver; granddaughter Molly Weaver Forsythe, her husband Colt Forsythe and their children Emery and Addison Forsythe; grandson William Austin Weaver and his children Amy, Riddik, Rhoper and Remington Weaver, grandson Bobby Weaver and his wife Kristin and their children Brayden Fletcher, Chevy Raylin, and Lincoln Weaver who is expected in March. Other members of the family include Brian and Courtney Bullen and their daughters Kendall and Brighton. Viewing will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 1 at Walker Funeral Home. Internment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Following internment, the family invites friends to join them at the home of Bob and Kelli Weaver, 77 Granada in Shawnee to share in the celebration of Bill Weaver’s life.
