He said, “She caught my eye.” The couple eloped and were married in Van Buren, Arkansas after dating for seven months. He often told the story that after they were married, he would get his paycheck on Saturday, buy groceries for the week, save money for gas, then go to Springlake Amusement Park to spend the rest of the money on rides. Earnest was a Corporal in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. He spent time at Fort Sill, Fort Leonard Wood, and Camp Carson before moving to California. He was then stationed in Korea for a year operating heavy equipment to build airstrips. He worked in a variety of occupations and places, including laying pipeline in Indiana and New York, drilling water wells in Arizona, and working on drilling rigs in Oklahoma. He also worked at Macklanburg-Duncan in Oklahoma City for five years. Earnest retired after working at Tinker Air Force Base from June 1968 to December 1987, where he supervised jet engine testing. Earnest was saved on Mother’s Day 1957 and was ordained as a Free Will Baptist Deacon in June 1959. He has been a member of the NE Free Will Baptist Church of Shawnee since 1966. Earnest lived his faith and was a strong Christian example to his family, his church, and everyone he met.
