Alice Maxine Bowlan

March 3, 1923 — November 21, 2017

Alice Maxine Cowan Bowlan, 94, passed from this life to be with her lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the McLoud Nursing Center, McLoud, OK. She was born on March 3, 1923 in Shawnee, OK, the oldest of four children of Keether Cowan and Ada B. Cowan. She was raised in the South Rock Creek area east of Shawnee where she started school. After graduation from Earlsboro HS, she married Tilford "Sarge" Bowlan of Shawnee on October 11, 1941. Throughout the war years she accompanied "Sarge" when she could and cared for their first child, Lavitha. The military service took her to residences in Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Colorado and 2 years in Japan. Also to this union a daughter, Shauna, and a son, Tilford Jr. were added. Ultimately their final military posting was in Shawnee OK. Maxine was active in her local church, Rock Creek, Sharon, Trinity Baptist in Shawnee and Hillside Baptist in McLoud. She actively supported several veteran organizations in Shawnee. She was an excellent cook, seamstress and quilt maker. She enjoyed crocheting and spending time making items for friends and family. After the children were grown, Maxine and "Sarge" became avid campers. In a short time, they combined their camping with serving the Lord as volunteer missionaries to North America through the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board. Serving as church planters and assisting start up missionary work in such places as Vermont, California, and Arizona, where "Sarge" passed away in 1985. At that point she moved back to Shawnee and eventually to McLoud, OK in 1996 where she remained until she moved to the McLoud Nursing Center in January of 2015. She enjoyed traveling, working in church, singing and sewing. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. Preceeding her in death were her parents, Keether and Ada Cowan, sister Emogene Satterwhite, 3 step brothers, Noble, Sid and Buck Cowan, daughter Lavitha Dudley, grandson Christopher Hankins. She is survived by her daughter Shauna Carver and husband, Jim Carver of McLoud, OK; son Tilford Bowlan Jr of McLoud; sister Mary Jane Cash of Lampasas, TX; brother J.M. Cowan of Bull Head City, NV; grandson Brad Bowlan of Ponca City OK; grandson Mark Hankins, wife Susan, great granddaughter Ashley and husband Reid Williams and great- great granddaughter Evelyn of New Braunfels, TX; grandson Keith Carver, wife Misty, great grandsons Jacob and Jarrett, great granddaughter Haley, husband Hayden Avant and great-great granddaughter Brinlee, all of Midwest City, OK. Maxine was especially proud of her 2 fifth generation granddaughters. She had many cousins, nephews, nieces and many very close friends and acquaintances. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 25, at Hillside Baptist Church, northof McLoud. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee, Interim Pastor Doug Henson will officiate.
