Alta Harmon

Alta Harmon was born on December 3, 1937, to Cecil and Leta Brock in Tecumseh, Oklahoma. She had two siblings, John and Linda. Alta attended and graduated from Macomb School. In 1957, Alta married Sid Harmon. Together, they raised two children, daughter Jan and son Tony.

Alta cherished her children and made it a priority to be supportive of their activities. She rarely missed attending sporting events, band concerts, or school plays that her children were involved in. Alta was very proud of her children's accomplishments.

Alta not only played a vital role in raising her children, she also contributed to the household in other ways. Along with being a wife and mother, Alta worked different jobs over the years, culminating in her being named branch manager of the First State Bank’s Bethel Acres branch. Along the way, she made many friends. Most who knew Alta came to love and respect her.

As a child, Alta loved riding horses, going to the field with her father and simply being outdoors. At some point in her youth, Alta came to accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Later in life, she enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, and watching the birds that she and Sid would regularly feed. Alta was an active member of both the First Church of God and later New Beginnings, where her love of Christ blessed each. Alta’s joys in life were simple: God, family and friends. All who knew her recognized that these traits made her a person to be loved and respected.

Alta loved her children, but when she became a grandmother and later a great-grandmother, her heart overflowed with joy. She reveled in watching them grow up and would tell everyone how proud she was of their individual accomplishments. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, “Granny” was always there with a smile, a kind word and thoughtful advice.

Alta was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Sid Harmon, both parents, sister, Linda Brock-Cowan, and brother, John Brock.

Alta is survived by her daughter, Jan Afentul and husband, George, her son, Tony Harmon and wife, Patty, grandchildren, Justin Hartman and wife, Kate, Barrett Hartman and wife, Lindsey, Great-grandchildren Reese and Camryn Hartman, Preston Hartman and wife, Marina, Krista Hartman, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and sister-in-law Shirley Parkins and husband, Donnie.

Alta will be missed, but her legacy lives on because a part of her will always remain in those who were fortunate enough to call her mom, granny or friend. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all reflect aspects of Alta through their actions, mannerisms, and moralities. These reflections are a testament to the positive influence and love that truly defined her.

“Mom, Granny, Friend ... we love you and will miss you, greatly.”
