Betty Jean Griswold

Betty Jean Griswold, resident of Shawnee, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2022. She was 89 years old. Betty was born in Shawnee on January 18, 1933 to her parents, Leslie Howard and Miriam (Ives) Griswold. She graduated from Shawnee High School and graduated with the class of 1952. She attended the Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee and was a student at Oklahoma Baptist University.

Although Betty had limited sight and hearing throughout her life, she never let that slow her down from working in the Shawnee community. Betty was well known for her fierce independence and for her compassion, generosity, and faithfulness to others. She owned and operated the concession stand in Shawnee Post Office under the direction and supervision of the Rehabilitation Division of Oklahoma for 30 years and received an award on October 13, 1979, for 25 years of faithful service. Betty also received an award from the United Presbyterian Church of Shawnee, Oklahoma on November 11, 2007 for her long standing commitment to her church. She was a volunteer at the Shawnee Senior Center for 23 years and recorded over 7000 hours of service.

Her smile would make others smile and she was deeply cherished by her fellow Brookdale residents and an adoring staff. Betty was the president of the Brookdale Assisted Living Welcome Committee and the first to greet and acclimate new residents to their new home. Betty loved reading her newspapers and watering her flowers. She had a deep love for the Lord and serving others.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Miriam Griswold. She is survived by her cousins, Bruce Lyon, Duane Lyon, Richard Lyon, Marilyn Rambow, Pauline Robinson, Mary Ann Hankin, Don Griswold, Dale Griswold, and dear friend, Jim Smith.

Betty will be laid to rest during a graveside ceremony at Fairview Cemetery on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at 10:00 am.
