Betty Jewel Hight

Mrs. Betty Jewel Wyatt Hight was born on November 19, 1928, in Newport, Arkansas to James Wyatt and Addie Dell Woody Wyatt. She entered her eternal home on April 2, 2025, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She was a kind and caring woman of faith and an encouraging and supportive presence in the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

After graduating from high school, Betty married Army Master Sergeant James Hight. She found joy in being a military wife, traveling, attending church, and raising her young family. The Hight family are long-time members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee and her daughter and her husband still attend regularly. After the retirement of her husband, James, and as the younger children were growing older, Betty began a new pursuit as a Real Estate Agent. Upon receiving her license, she went on to work at several different agencies in Shawnee. Following a lucrative 20 + year real estate career, Betty retired and began the rewarding task of taking an active role in the lives of her grandchildren, cooking for and hosting family holiday gatherings, traveling and visiting family and friends and volunteering at Shawnee Hospital for more than 20 years. Her warm and friendly smile was often the first greeting visitors received as they entered the building.

Betty was always open to new opportunities and did everything with honesty and integrity. A gentle and unassuming woman, she was well loved by everyone.

Betty is survived by her loving children, William “Bill” Hight and his wife, Joy, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; daughter, Darlene Griffith and her husband, Jeff, of Shawnee, Oklahoma; and son, Richard and his wife, Marty, of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; as well as her 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren who all know her as, Nana. She further leaves behind a large extended family that spans the country, but were dear to her heart.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James Coleman Hight who passed away in Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1991; her son, James Henry Hight of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, who passed in 2024, and his wife, Linda, who passed in 2022. Betty is also preceded in death by her 3 older brothers, Ralph, Vernon and Roy and their spouses.
