With full hearts we honor Carol Jean Vogt of Shawnee Oklahoma. Carol was born to William Lane and Mary Marie Dougherty in Sapulpa Oklahoma. Upon loss of her parents, Carol was adopted by her Aunt and Uncle, Byrnina and Russel Koontz to be welcomed by sisters, Anna Jane Venozdel and Helen Touchfarber. Carol graduated from Healdton High School in 1949 as Salutatorian. She graduated Cum Laude from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1953, earning a Bachelor of Music Education. At OBU Carol belonged to Bisonettes, Bison Glee Club, Drama Club, Kappa Delta Pi and Sigma Alpha Iota. Most importantly she fell in love with Donald W. Vogt to whom she was married for 54 years. After teaching primary education and music education in both Florida and Tennessee, Carol earned her Masters of Education from Memphis State University.
Carol and Don made Shawnee their permanent home in 1960. Carol continued teaching grades K-6 and was a member of First Baptist Church Shawnee where she taught Sunday School for 30 years, sang in choir, and served in many caring ministries. Carol was a gifted community builder through Junior League, Chapter CI of PEO (40 yrs), Hawthorn Study Club (52 yrs), two bridge clubs, St. Gregory’s Museum Auxiliary and the Shawnee Public Library Board. She managed this while helping part time in Don’s office for some 20 years. Carol was an avid reader, learner, and traveler having visited sixteen countries to build cherished memories with family and friends. Carol dearly loved her friends some of whom enjoyed dinner club together for over 40 years. Carol was an amazing and loving parent, 11 years a home room Mother and PTA member, and 12 years a Camp Fire Girls Leader. She supported education with volunteer and fundraising efforts throughout her life. Carol’s home was a welcome gathering place, door always unlocked, open to neighborhood children, countless friends, family, out-of-town visitors, and strangers, even in the last years of her life. Carol loved hosting parties and had food on the ready. Her breakfast table was open to all neighbors who dropped by daily for encouraging conversation, snacks and coffee. Carol’s daughters recall that it was easy to find Carol in a crowd by listening for her laughter as Carol shared her great joy in people. She was a loyal friend, ever abounding in playfully good humor, a defender of children and the vulnerable.
Carol was preceded in death by her partner in life, Donald W. Vogt. Carol is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Fisher and Amy Roberts, two grandsons, Samuel and David Roberts, and two sons-in-law, Larry Fisher and Shawn Roberts.Monday, May 13, 2024
