It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles Wesley Cox, affectionately known as "Charlie," who left us on March 12, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on November 13, 1932, in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, to Marvin Wesley Cox and Ina Gene Edwards. Charlie graced this world with his gentle spirit and unwavering kindness. His journey through life was one of devotion and love, evident in every relationship he nurtured.
Charlie married his love Jo Ann Hughey in June of 1954 and they had a beautiful life together for 62 years.
Charlie's devoted life was characterized by his dedication to family and community. He began his career at Macklanburg-Duncan, where he operated the punch press before rising to the esteemed position of Vice President of Sales. Charlie’s career was not just about personal achievements; it was also a testament to his commitment to providing for his family. After retirement, he and his beloved wife, Jo Ann, embarked on a venture to create Charlie's Palace in Shawnee. This lively venue embodied his passion for music and served as a cherished entertainment hub for families in Shawnee and surrounding areas.
A proud father, Charlie's heart swelled with love for his two daughters, Charla Ann and Dana Jo. The joy he felt in their laughter, the pride in their accomplishments, and the unwavering support he offered them set a standard of love that all aspire to reach. He was also a treasured partner to Myran and adored by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were fortunate to receive the warmth of his presence.
An accomplished musician from a young age, Charlie began playing professionally at just nine years old. Although many encouraged him to pursue stardom in Nashville, he chose to stay rooted in Oklahoma, prioritizing his family over fame. His musical talents were a balm during difficult times, and he shared his love of music selflessly, creating a nurturing space for young artists to flourish at Charlie's Palace.
Beyond music, Charlie was a talented woodcarver. After retiring, he and Jo Ann would travel the country in an RV, spending peaceful days with fellow carvers, honing their skills, and crafting beautiful pieces that now hold special places in the hearts of family and friends.
A Christian man at his core, Charlie lived his life avoiding conflict, valuing peace and positivity, and always making room for kindness in his interactions. He had an extraordinary ability to see the good in every situation and in all people, radiating warmth that drew others to him. Charlie possessed a rare gift for empathy, and his presence was a source of comfort for those around him.
The outpouring of love and memories will linger long after his departure, and his legacy of gentleness, encouragement, and unwavering devotion will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those he touched. He leaves behind not only cherished memories but also an enduring impact on his family and the community he loved so deeply.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Cox and Ina Leas; and beloved wife Jo Ann Cox.
He is survived by his partner Myran Dill; daughters Charla Ann Story and Dana Jo Cox; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service to honor Charlie will be held on March 21, 2025, at Walker Funeral Chapel.
Let us celebrate a life well-lived, a soul now at rest, and the beautiful music of memories that will play on in our hearts.
