David Van Brunt

David C. Van Brunt, age 69, Shawnee resident passed away Sunday, February 19, 2023 in Oklahoma City.

Friends and loved ones may pay their respects from 1-5pm Sunday, February 26th with the family present to greet friends from 3-4pm.  A celebration of David's life will be held at 2:00pm Monday, February 27, 2023 in the Chapel at Walker Funeral & Cremation Service.

David was born December 14, 1953, in Perry, Oklahoma to Margie (Jordan) and Charlie Van Brunt. Perry is where David spent his early youth before his family moved to Paden, where he graduated from High School. While in high school, David was active in 4H and FFA.  Following high school, David attended the Seminole State College.  There, David joined the school choir, earning money as a wedding singer to fund the various trips of the choir. As well, he earned an associate's degree in Criminal Justice, establishing the foundation of his lifelong passion for law Enforcement.  Tecumseh police department was David's first job as a law enforcement officer.  After a time, he joined the Shawnee Police Department and served as the department's first K-9 officer.  David's love for training dogs and serving the public went with him as he later served a number of years with the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's office, and then the Kickapoo Tribal Police.  Retirement from law enforcement came in the early 2000's after serving in law enforcement for nearly 30 years.  Bail Bonding was another of David's pursuits and he was a member of the Bondsman Assoc.  When he wasn't protecting and serving, David was a master carpenter and cabinet builder, a skill which would have supported him professionally as he had a keen eye for perfect corners.  David was, above all, a loving father and grandfather giving substantial life wisdom to his family alongside his ornery, fun-loving ways.  He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his children, Terry Van Brunt of Tulsa, OK, Kraig Van Brunt and wife Allison, Greg Van Brunt and Amber Van Brunt, all of Shawnee; sister, Jan Johnston and husband Gary of Las Vegas, NV; sister-in-law, Janice Van Brunt of Yukon, OK; grandchildren, Logan Van Brunt, Kash Van Brunt, Madison Van Brunt, Molly Van Brunt, Fletcher Van Brunt, Shepherd Van Brunt, and Beckham Collins; nephews, Troy Van Brunt, Nick Van Brunt, and Jordan Johnston, as well as niece, Amy Foster.
David was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Mike Van Brunt and Kenny Van Brunt.
