Charles L Zurmehly

Charles Louis Zurmehly died Saturday, May 22, 2021 at the age of 97.

He was born in Lima, Ohio on January 20, 1924 to C.E. and Cleta (Rheams) Zurmehly. He was a graduate of Shawnee High School and served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II being honorably discharged in 1945. Following the war, Charles, along with his brother-in-law Newton Pritchett and younger brother Clyde Zurmehly, opened the C & N Sport Shop in downtown Shawnee, Oklahoma. 

Charles married Iva Jo Montgomery of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma in 1948 and made Shawnee their home. Charles retired as a rural postal carrier after thirty years with the United States Postal Service. He was a member of the Kiwanis and a lifetime member of the Wesley Methodist Church in Shawnee where he taught Sunday School and served as a lay leader. Later in life, Charles enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and working in his backyard garden.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Iva Jo Zurmehly; his sister Helen Pritchett and husband Newton; his younger brother C.E. Zurmehly, Jr and his wife Jean. 

Charles is survived by his daughter: Donna Sidmore of Moore, Oklahoma. Son: Charles Zurmehly, Jr. and wife of Edmond; grandson Kyle Sidmore of Shawnee; granddaughter Lisa Milhan and husband Dan of Moore; Michael Zurmehly and wife Emily of Edmond; and Lauren Horton and husband Skylar of Ft. Worth, Texas. Also, Kyler Sidmore of Shawnee and Nathan and Alex Milhan of Moore.

Graveside Services will be Thursday, May 27, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. at Fairview Cemetery. Chris Dodson officiating.
