Shawnee resident, Dr. Robert J. “Bob” Barnard, 85, died Wednesday, June 7, 2017 in a local hospital. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 12, 2017 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with Dr. Jerry Ball, Rev. Larry Sparks and Phil Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Bob was born May 27, 1932 in Bethel, Oklahoma to Acial Olen & Eunice Agnes (Penny) Barnard. He was a graduate of Bethel High School. He received his Bachelor’s from OBU, where he was on the President’s Honor Roll, and his Master’s and Doctorate in Education from OU. Dr. Barnard was a teacher, mainly world history, but also taught typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, consumer economics, Oklahoma History, civics, U.S. History and government. He was also Assistant Principal (1974-1975), and Principal (1975-1978) of Shawnee Mid-High and Assistant Superintendent (1978) of I-93 Shawnee Public School, and supervisor of the high school annex (sophomores) for 2 years. He also taught at Strother High School for 2 ½ years, with a combined total classroom experience of 15 ½ years. He was a sponsor of Senior, Junior and sophomore classes, 4-H clubs, class plays, senior trips and Future Teachers Club. He worked as Administrative Assistant-Attendance, part-time for two years (1967, 1968), Director of Communications, Shawnee Learning Center-Adult Basic Education and GED Applications, Homebound Services for pregnant girls and physically ill children, and other miscellaneous duties. He received the Outstanding Young Educator from Shawnee Public Schools, as well as the Shawnee Teacher of the Year. He also served as Adjunct Professor at East Central State University-Teacher Preparation, and at Seminole State College in Business Statistics. On November 25, 1960 he married Janet Marie Clem He served with the United States Army from Feb. 13, 1953-December 31, 1954, as Military policeman, escort, and security guard, serving in continental United States and Germany. He was a member of the 95th Division (Reserve for approximately seven years), reaching the rank of Senior Supply Non-Commissioned Officer of the Division, E-7. Dr. Barnard had several articles published in The Shawnee News-Star, Oklahoma Teacher and Clearinghouse Magazine. He served as a Shawnee City Commissioner and Shawnee Vice-Mayor, as well as serving on various Boards and Commissions, such as OBU Board of Advisors, Shawnee Housing Authority, Shawnee Planning Commission, Shawnee Farmer’s Market Board, Shawnee Hospital Authority, Mid-America Healthcare-Shawnee Regional Hospital, Shawnee Economic Development Foundation, Campfire Board of Directors, Oklahoma Home Health Advisory Board, Greater Shawnee City of Commerce, and the Shawnee Historical Society. He was also a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and Rotary Club. Bob was preceded in death by his parents He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughter & son-in-law: Melanie Anne & Paul Henry Burgess, and grandchildren: Zachary Burgess and Paige Burgess
