Edith Irene Potter

Edith Irene Potter, 91 years old, of Shawnee, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023. She was born in Seminole, Oklahoma on July 1, 1932 to John and Wilma Chaffin. The fourth of nine children, Edith grew up in Wewoka. She was a bright student and a hard worker. She graduated from school early. She earned an accounting award that included a bouquet of roses and twenty-five dollars.

On May 28, 1949, Edith married Jeff David Potter in Wewoka. She and her husband lived in various locations during their early marriage while Jeff was in the military and pursuing a career in the oil business. The Potters lived in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, and New Mexico. In 1963, they returned to Oklahoma and operated the Rock Creek Grocery store for a few years. Edith had an active career of her own. She worked as a real estate agent for Potter Real Estate in the late 1960s. In the 1970s, she worked for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. Later, she worked for the Department of Transportation until her retirement in 1994.

Edith was a loving mother to her four children. Jeff and Edith made many memories with their kids, taking them on camping trips and water skiing at Okemah Lake. Edith's hobbies included crocheting, reading books, and caring for her dogs (Bo, Cerveza, Sadie, Sally, and Happy). Edith was also a long time member of Shawnee First Baptist Church.

Edith was really in her element as a grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a fun grandma who loved spending time with her kids. She was known to ride bicycles, play football, have tea parties, go "bear hunting" at Sportsman Lake, and make any food requested.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Jeff, her father and mother, her brother, Ianos Chaffin, her sisters, Eula Rainey, Lula May Chaffin, Louise Sherrin, Lauretta Chaffin, and Barbara Landers, son-in-law, Rick Goode, granddaughter, Ashley Fendley, and great-grandson, Blake Shepard.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Warden and husband Don of Seminole, daughter, Marsha Mauldin and husband Mike of Owasso, son, David Potter and wife Jaclyn of Denton, Texas, and daughter, Susan Fendley and husband Terry of Edmond. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter, and sisters, Paulette Lowdermilk and Sherry Moon.

Edith was a loving and caring person who would help anybody, whether they be a young child or an elderly friend. Her family loved her very much and will miss her greatly. It is a great comfort to know that she trusted in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.
