Hilda Quintana

June 26, 1936 — July 16, 2023

Los Angeles

Our family lost our family’s matriarch, Hilda Wood Quintana, on Sunday, July 16, 2023. She had just weeks before celebrated her 87th birthday. Hilda was the daughter of Florence Carter Pawpa and grew up in Meeker along Moccasin Trail. Hilda attended several U.S. Boarding Schools including Pawnee Indian School, and was a graduate of Haskell Institute in 1955, before signing up for the relocation program which brought her to Los Angeles, California where she married, raised a family, and lived the rest of her life. Hilda remained a proud member of the Sac and Fox Nation and would make trips to the Annual Sac and Fox powwow and looked forward to reading the monthly newsletter. During her life, she had three children, Rose, Karen, and Julianna, and seven grandchildren Joseph, Julian, Lia, Loren, Jade, Lorence, and January, and many more great-grandchildren, close friends, friends from church, and extended family members.

Hilda married Joseph P. Quintana (Pueblo) a bronze star recipient and veteran who worked on the railroad. She began a career at the County of Los Angeles probation office where she worked with juveniles. She was very involved with the Native American Methodist Church and traveled throughout the United States with the church. Later in life, Hilda won a significant case against developers in L.A. who were trying to displace low-income households. Throughout her life, she could be found watching a game of Oklahoma football, Dallas Cowboy football, or an episode of her favorite, “I Love Lucy”. She enjoyed a good piece of frybread or listening to the sound of drums at a local powwow.

Our family is thankful for the Sac and Fox Nation, and we share our appreciation for Letha, Christina, and Joyce for all their hard work in helping to bring Hilda home to lay at rest with her mother and all of her relatives. On Thursday evening, July 27th, family will have a wake service at horseshoe bend officiated by Jonas Walker. The ceremony will take place on Friday, July 28th at Wakolee Cemetery. Services under the direction of Walker Funeral & Cremation Service.
