James "Jim" Farthing, 82, of Shawnee, Oklahoma, was born on June 17, 1942, to Thelbert and Theresa Farthing. He passed away peacefully on the evening of Thursday, March 13, 2025.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Ramona Farthing; his sister, Iris Harp; his son, David Farthing; daughter-in-law Sheila and his cherished grandchildren, Jacob (23) and twins Katherine (21) and Madison (21).
A lifelong learner and educator, Jim attended Oklahoma Baptist University, earning a bachelor's degree in history before continuing his studies at Duke University, where he received his doctorate in history. He returned to his hometown for a career in teaching at OBU, where he spent many years shaping the minds of students and sharing his deep passion for history.
Beyond the classroom, Jim was a man devoted to his faith. He poured his heart into the local church, serving as a pastor, singing in the choir at First Baptist Church for 34 years, and preparing meals for the homeless. His life was marked by a love for service and a commitment to caring for others and his community, shown even by his work as deputy sheriff for Pottawatomie County.
Jim was also an avid traveler, a voracious reader, and a lover of music. Yet, above all, he loved his family, cherishing the time spent with them deeply.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 19, at 1:00 PM at Heritage Church in Shawnee, OK.
Jim’s legacy of faith, kindness, and knowledge will live on in the lives of those he touched. He will be deeply missed.
