James Robert Hurst was born to Robert and Fayrene (Lovelady) Hurst in St. Louis, Ok., on October 19, 1930 and left this life on March 24, 2023, at the age of 93. For the past sixty plus years, he has been a resident of Tecumseh, Ok.
James attended St. Louis public schools, and after graduating, he served two years active duty in the Korean War. After attending Okmulgee Technical College, James began a 32-year career at Tinker Air Force Base, culminating in his retirement in 1992. While having never met a stranger, James loved to sell peaches and watermelons and enjoyed interacting with his customers wherever he was selling. He would always generously give his produce to family and friends alike. James was especially proud that his wife, both children, and two grandchildren were public school teachers.
James was a loving husband to his wife LaQuita (Malcom) Hurst, father to Jamie Murray and Randell Hurst, grandfather to Stephenie Huett, Dustin Venable, Lindsay Youngblood, Ariana Hurst, and Preston Hurst. He has six great-grandchildren: Hayden Youngblood, Rhett James Venable, Landen Youngblood, Rylin Youngblood, Mila Huett and Olivia Huett. He is also survived by his brother, Jack Hurst, and sister, Patricia Ramsey.
James was preceded in death by his wife, LaQuita, son, Randell, and six sisters: Lorene Guadagna, Neva Knight, Helen Jean Patton, Eldean Wing, Joyce Parker, and Margaret French.
A graveside ceremony will be held Wednesday, March 27, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Tecumseh Cemetery.
