Joseph Donald Barrick

Joseph Donald Barrick passed peacefully early morning of Sunday, August 25, at the age of 89.

Services will be held at St. Benedict’s church (632 N. Kickapoo, Shawnee) with a funeral service at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 29. Joe will be buried at Calvary Cemetery in Shawnee.

Joe was born on August 26, 1934, in Kansas City, Missouri to Foster Dewey Barrick and Mary Alice (Lill) Barrick. He married Kay Paula Knouse on November 26, 1959, at St. Francis Church in Oklahoma City. Joe and Kay were happily married for 58 years and together and have three children and seven grandchildren. Kay passed in 2018.

Joe received a PhD from Oklahoma University and taught mathematics, and coached men’s baseball and women’s basketball, at St. Gregory’s College and retired in 1996 after 30 years. Later, Joe enjoyed volunteer service at SSM Hospital and St. Benedict’s Church. He loved traveling the world with Kay and their family and friends, visiting Europe, China, Micronesia, Australia, and Belize. In 2022, Joe visited the Holy Land of Israel. In their “Gourmet Club,” Joe and Kay enjoyed friendship and menus from around the globe for more than 40 years. Joe also enjoyed playing golf, racquetball and bridge and following the St. Louis Cardinals and Oklahoma State University sports.

Joe is survived by his three children Timothy Barrick and wife Jamie, Rebecca Mickelson and husband Ryan, and Pamela Baker and husband Douglas; seven grandchildren, Grant Barrick and fiancée Megan Dehn, Jack Barrick and wife Sarah, Ashlee Mickelson and fiancé Dayvon Taylor, Christopher and Marc Mickelson, and Justin and Alexander Baker, and along with many cousins, nieces and nephews and their families. We express our gratitude for the loving care of the staff at Primrose Retirement Community where dad lived since July 2023  and the staff of Cohesive Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, we welcome you to make a donation in memory of Joe to Doctors Without Borders (http://donate.doctorswithoutborders.org/) or St. Benedict’s Church (632 N. Kickapoo, Shawnee, OK 74801).
