Joyce Anne Cowie

d. September 8, 2017

Shawnee resident Joyce Anne Cowie, 84, passed away Friday, Sept. 8, 2017 in Oklahoma City.  She was born in April of 1933 to Harvey Scallon and Ruth (Bewalda) Scallon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  On September 4, 1954 she married George Cowie.  In 1976 George’s job with Allen Bradley brought the family from Milwaukee, to Shawnee, Oklahoma. Joyce leaves behind three daughters, Sharon Toth of Port Orange, Florida, Lynn Cowie, Tecumseh and Jane Eagleston, Shawnee.  Two grandchildren, Sharon’s son Aaron Toth, his wife Brianna and daughter Peyton Jae and Lynn’s daughter, Caitlin Cox. She also leaves behind her constant companion, Peter the Corgi.  Whether it was around the corner or around the world Joyce was always ready for new experiences.  She was the center of the family and cherished time spent with both friends and family. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, George Cowie. Joyce was very active in our community.  Her first love being the Mabee Gerrer Museum of Art.  As a Friend of the museum since 2003 and a docent, she spent many happy hours learning about art, sharing her knowledge with young and old visitors to the museum and preparing for the annual gala and auction.  She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and her special ministry was celebrating birthday parties with the boys incarcerated at Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center in Tecumseh.  She was also a proud member of St. John Kitchen Krew, helping to prepare and serve Friday Feast to our community to benefit the church.  Joyce was an active member of the YMCA, where she loved to work out with her friends in water aerobics classes.  She belonged to the Elks Ladies Golf Association and had volunteered with the Literacy program through the library. She always made time to enjoy lunch dates with her good friends. Joyce’s bright smile, her gracious manner and her willingness to share and give of herself will never be forgotten. Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 15, at Walker Funeral Service, with Pastor Jim Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
