Lola Verle (Norton) Mullinax passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 22, 2023. She was 97 years old.
Lola was born to Ernest E. and Pearl Norton on September 20, 1925 in Shamrock, OK. She was one of 8 children and earned the nickname of “Pokey” because she was always falling behind the other kids while walking to school. As a result, the nickname stuck and for the rest of her life she was lovingly known to her family as “Pokey”. Lola graduated from Shawnee High School in 1943. Later that year, on September 5th, she married A.D. Mullinax and they made their home in Shawnee.
Lola worked at the Morris Plan Loan Company and later retired from Arvest Bank. She also served on several women’s organizations, holding officer positions in the Shawnee Chapter of Business and Professional Women.
After her retirement, she continued to enjoy helping people by volunteering at Shawnee Regional Hospital. She and her husband enjoyed weekend trips to their lake cabin, where they fished and tended their garden.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, A.D. Mullinax, four brothers, Lloyd Norton, Raymond Norton, Olen Norton, and Gene Norton, as well as three sisters, Goldie Chatham, Mildred Smith and Polly Brinlee.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Randall and Judy Mullinax of Shawnee and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lola was a faithful member of the Central Church of Christ in Shawnee, where she and her best friend, Lillie Smith, were always seen together, smiling and happy prior to their passing.
A funeral ceremony for Lola will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, March 27, 2023 at the Walker Funeral Chapel with Logan Edmison officiating. Following the ceremony, she will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery.
