On Jun 2, 2022 at 4:05 AM at Prague Municipal Hospital, Prague, Oklahoma, Maura Dizon Peterson completed her earthly journey to commence her walk in her new life with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for all eternity. Maura was born on November 30, 1945 on Siquijor Island, the Republic of the Philippines to Pablo and Gregoria Dizon. Maura was the fourth of six children. Maura attended St. Paul Elementary School and St. Paul High School in Dumaguete City on the island of Negros Oriental, Philippines. She continued her higher education at Foundation University, Dumaguete City graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education. Maura enjoyed cooking Filipino, Chinese and later American recipes for family and friends. She especially enjoyed making Pancit, a Filipino recipe of noodles which can be rice noodles, egg noodles, or mung bean noodles typically sauteed with beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, other seafoods and vegetables; spring rolls made of thin paper-like wrapper/pastry with fillings of meats, seafood mixed with chopped cabbage, carrots, onions either baked or fried. Maura also enjoyed making Lumpia filled with fruits usually strawberries, apples, cherries, pineapples, or mangoes. Fried bananas, sweet rice dishes, fried pineapples and fried manages were dishes she enjoyed making and eating. She lastly enjoyed making and eating Lechon (a roasted young pig over an open fire). Since coming to the United States, Maura planted annual gardens of tomatoes, eggplant, corn, sweet potatoes, onions, okra, green beans, lettuce as she enjoyed fresh vegetables. Maura also enjoyed the big band music of the 1930's through 1950's, the music of Elvis Presley, the Bee Gees, and the Beatles. She was a very good dancer, often winning prizes for her dancing. Maura was an active member of St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church in Shawnee, at times attending Mass twice a week before being crippled by dementia. She remained at home watching and participating in Mass on television through the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN). Maura is survived by an exceptionally large family of cousins, nieces, and nephews in the Philippines, United States, Canada, and the Middle East. Maura is also survived by her husband Stephen Peterson of Shawnee, who she married on January 1, 1974, at our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church, Dumaguete City. They had met while he was visiting the Philippines during his military service in Vietnam three years earlier. Maura arrived in the United States in September 1974. From this union of marriage, Mario D. Peterson was born in June 1975. Mario is married to Sarah Warren-Peterson, they currently make their home in Hiroshima, Japan. Maura has two remaining sisters: Candelaria Ligon of Dumaguete City, Philippines and Theresa Dizon Smith and her husband Tony Smith of Algood, Tennessee. Friends and loved ones may pay their respects at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 7, from 4-6PM and Wednesday, June 8, from 8AM - 3:30PM. A Rosary service will be held for Maura at 7PM Wednesday, June 8 at St. Benedict Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Maura at 10am on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at St. Benedict Catholic Church with Reverend Joseph P. Schwarz officiating. Following the Mass, Maura will be laid to rest at the Calvary Cemetery in Shawnee. Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral & Cremation Service.
