Michael Day Barrett, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2023, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He was 73 years old. He is survived by his loving wife, Faye Barrett, and his sons, Jeff Culwell and Scott Michael Barrett.
Michael was born in McLoud, Oklahoma, to Billy (Buddy) and Sue Barrett who preceded him in death. Michael treasured his childhood memories in a small town, growing up with his brother, Jon Barrett and sister, Susan Barrett Baca. At 18 years old, Michael was drafted into the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and served two years on the USS Guadeloupe. After his service, he attended Rose State College in Oklahoma, earning two associate degrees in History and Psychology. Michael was self-employed for many years before joining Tinker Air Force Base, where he quickly advanced to a supervisory position. He valued the lifelong friendships he made while working there.
Michael had an exceptional ability to connect with others, taking a genuine interest in their lives and hobbies. He was an outstanding storyteller, joke-teller, and fact-teller, with a vast range of passions, including films, biographies, histories, old Hollywood lore, antiques, art, music, architecture, landscaping, politics, and sports of all kinds. He was a true Sooner at heart and enjoyed horse racing, automobile racing, bikes, motorcycles, baseball, basketball, softball, and most importantly, the Oklahoma Sooners Football Team.
Mike met the love of his life, Faye Culwell, and her son, Jeff, in May 1982. They married on June 25, 1987, in Shawnee and gave birth to a baby boy, Scott, two years later— Mike's pride and joy. Mike and Faye remained flirty, fun-loving, and devoted to one another throughout the years. Their eldest son, Jeff Culwell, resides in Harrah, OK, with his wife Tamara and daughter Mya. He works at TAFB in electrical aviation. Their youngest son, Scott Michael Barrett, resides in Los Angeles, CA, and works as an Associate Producer for Apple TV. Mike was incredibly proud of them both. He instilled in them the values of empathy, honesty, and decency; which he carried with him throughout his life.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so on Thursday, May 4th from 8am to 5pm and on Friday, May 5th, from 8am to 7pm. Mike's family will hold a memorial visitation on Friday, May 5, 2023 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Walker Funeral & Cremation Service. He will be remembered for his kind heart, exceptional storytelling, sharp mind, and wonderful sense of humor. Mike will be deeply missed by his family and a vast circle of friends.
