MCLOUD

Russell Fred Coon

Russell Fred Coon, 60, devoted husband, father of four sons, and lover of Christ entered his eternal home on Thursday, December 14, 2023 surrounded by family in McLoud, Oklahoma.

Russ was born in Lubbock, Texas on October 3, 1963 to Verleand Lynda Coon. In 1972, his family moved to Anadarko, Oklahoma where he spent his school years and he met the love of his life, Alana Clark. They married in 1984 and celebrated their 39th anniversary in June.

Russ’s love of people fueled his passion for serving as an Oklahoma City Firefighter for 25 1/2 years. He was termed a PSM (Perfect Size Man), but also one who could handle every crisis and help you handle yours. He loved serving as well as the brotherhood shared by those in service.

Following retirement, he and Alana opened CrossFit SDG in Shawnee in 2016, and operated it for 3 years.

A man of contagious competitiveness, he coached many years of competitive sports including baseball for his sons and their friends. Russ was a kid at heart and loved adventure and play. A man of vision, a man of creativity and a man who was never at a loss for “coaching-up” people. He was the ultimate mentor and was willing to put himself in awkward situations because he cared about people’s lives more than their feelings. His unforgettable, bold and building words were a testament to hisdeep, deep faith in Christ and his love and service for his family. Russ put a very concerted effort into improving himself as a human being and how he could leave any place in better condition than he found it.

Even confronted by a terminal diagnosis and given only months to live, Russ absorbed the life-changing news in a way that brought strength and calm to his friends and loved ones who often heard him say, “I’m a winner either way” with regard to his ultimate healing.

Russ’s greatest achievements and legacy stem from being a proud father to Blake (Rebecca) Coon, Jared (Mandi) Coon, Turner (Taylor) Coon, all of Shawnee, Oklahoma; and Landon (Tabitha) Coon of Edmond, Oklahoma.

Inspirational “Pop” to Maggi, Stevi, Charli, Elizabeth, Rawlings, Andi, Titus, Teagan, and Tucker Coon.

Brother to Steve (Penny) Coon, Carnegie, Oklahoma; Angela (Dale) Lewis, Anadarko, Oklahoma;
Brother-in-Law to Jimmy and Raeshel Flewallen, Shawnee; Brett and LaMae Green, Cashion; Shalayn (Randy) Miller, Edmond; and he was a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Russ’s service will be held Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at 2 pm at Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee, interment will be at Garden Grove Cemetery in Prague, Oklahoma.
