Ruth was born June 21, 1921 in Marysville, Texas to the late A.S Lyons and Delcie Hunter Lyons Sauls. She moved to the area around McAlester, Oklahoma when she was four with her mother, step-father and two sisters. She attended grade school and high school in this community. She lived there until attending college at Oklahoma A&M (OSU) in the early forties. After college she worked at several businesses in Oklahoma City as a secretary and accountant for many years.
In her late twenties she married the late William “Max” Maxey of Oklahoma City. She and Max were married for over thirty years and she continued to work, but also became a stepmother to Max’s three children from a former marriage and helped to raise a step-grandson.
After Max’s death, she married the late Haskell “Hack” Horn of Shawnee, Oklahoma. While living in Shawnee, she helped her husband Hack with his oil and gas investments and continued after his death. She became a stepmother again to Hack’s grown daughter and step-grandmother to four grandchildren.
She loved to play bridge, canasta, and dominoes. She also enjoyed gardening of both vegetables and flowers. She loved decorating for all holidays, but especially Christmas. She also loved to water ski and was sorry when she had to give that up. Ruth also enjoyed shopping for both clothes and jewelry. Ruth was very active in the Delta Theta Chi (Beta Chapter) women’s business sorority of Oklahoma City. She had been a member since 1944 and was recently given a lifetime membership. She was also a member of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church in Shawnee and was attending when she could during this year. Ruth was also a member of the Garden Club.
A special thanks to Lynette Bivens who has been her personal assistant for several years as well as her neighbor. Also, the family would like to thank the Visiting Angels who have cared for Ruth for the past two years and Oklahoma Palliative & Hospice Care who provided care for Ruth in her final days.
She is survived by a stepdaughter: Karen Horn Hunn and husband William of Fort Worth, Texas, step-grandchildren and spouses: Monte Pearson (Jodi) of Keller, Texas, Holly Burchett (Matt) of Woodway, Texas, Christina Benkowitz (Kevan) of Plano, Texas, and William Lee Rogers of Oklahoma City, nine step-great grandchildren and two step-great-great grandchildren that she loved dearly: Sarah and Cole Pearson of Keller, Texas, Ethan, Madeline “Ruth”, and Micah Burchett of Woodway, Texas, Rylee and Kensey Benkowitz of Plano, Texas and Jessica Boaz and Chris Rogers of Couch, Missouri and many friends and acquaintances.
