Sidney "Sid" Carl Harmon

Sidney Carl “Sid” Harmon, 83, of Shawnee, was born December 24, 1934 in Belle Plaine, Kansas and passed away December 26, 2017 in McLoud.Sid became a permanent resident of Oklahoma when his family moved here in 1937. He eventually attended, and graduated from Dale High School, where he joined both the baseball team and the Future Farmers of America chapter. Although Sid enjoyed playing baseball, his true passions were farming and raising cattle. Sid excelled in the FFA program, winning many awards for his crops and livestock. His achievements and determination culminated in 1953 at the National FFA convention, held in Kansas City, MO, where he was one of only two FFA members in Oklahoma to receive the American Star Farmer award, the highest award any FFA member can be given. Sid exemplified the agricultural way of life, and became an active member of the farming community upon graduating high school in 1953.Sid met the love of his life, Alta Brock, in 1956, and they were married on February 22, 1957. Sid and Alta were blessed with a daughter, Jan later that year, and a son, Tony, in 1969. Sid loved his children, and was always engaged in their activities, whether it be teaching Jan how to throw and catch softballs, or coaching and sponsoring Tony’s little league baseball teams. He truly enjoyed watching his children excel in sports, and in life.Sid, having established a successful marriage, family, and career, also found time to pursue another passion from childhood – raising cattle. He established Harmon Limousin, where he raised quality, purebred Limousin Cattle, and was proud to have become a member of the Heart of Oklahoma Limousin Association.Sid celebrated 60 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Alta, on February 22, 2017.He is survived by his wife Alta, of Shawnee, daughter, Jan Afentul and her husband George of Shawnee, son, Tony Harmon of Shawnee, grandsons, Justin Hartman and his wife Kate of Tulsa, Barrett Hartman and his wife Lindsey of Choctaw, and four great-grandchildren, Reese, Camryn, Preston and Krista, as well as one sister, Shirley Parkins and her husband Donnie, of Mulvane, KS.Sid was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Wilma Harmon, and four sisters, Wanita Carrouthers, Vera Abney, Una Ballard, and Hope Allen.Sid will forever be remembered as an honest, loving, hard-working and dependable husband, father, grandfather and friend.Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Walker Funeral Service Chapel with Larry Sparks and Tom Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in Dale Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Service. The family will be at the funeral home Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. to visit with friends and family.
